Week Two Losses Take Some Shine Off Texas Teams

It was another great weekend of early-season college football with some notable upsets and Heisman contenders continuing to build their résumés.

Stanford lost to USC, Clemson proved they deserve their top ranking, UCLA starts 0-2 again, Nebraska’s loss to Colorado lowers expectations for the second year of the Scott Frost era, and Tennessee… well, let’s just say that UT Chattanooga has to feel better than they usually would about going into Neyland Stadium to face the Vols.

Losses took some of the shine off of Texas and Texas A&M, both of which were riding buzz last week. In fact, in the Kickoff Top 25 Texas dropped from #8 to #17 and Texas A&M fell from #13 last week to #22 this week. The AP Poll dropped Texas from #9 to #12, Texas A&M from #12 to #16.

Week One College Football 2019

Week One college football 2019

Both teams in this weekend’s marquee game of Week One in college football, #11 (#13) Oregon and #16 (#18) Auburn, have hopes of reaching the College Football Playoff. For one of them, that dream may die.

As we write this on Friday afternoon, we anticipate tonight’s 7 pm ET kickoffs of #18 (#17) Michigan State versus unranked Tulsa in East Lansing and #19 (#25) Wisconsin taking on South Florida in Tampa. A quick reminder that our poll may vary from AP’s rankings and are specified in parentheses next to the AP ranking.

Top-ranked Clemson started its season on Thursday with a convincing 52-14 win over Georgia Tech while #17 (#26) UCF made a statement by taking out Florida A&M 62-0. Texas A&M (ranked #12 by AP, #15 in the Kickoff Top 50) dominated unranked Texas State 41-7 and #14 (#10) Utah took care of unranked BYU 30-12.

College Football Prognostication: The Art of the Educated Guess

Few would ever be brave (or eccentric) enough to signal to the faithful that disaster awaits the team – saying things like “the best Christmas gift this fall will be an end to our misery” is hardly a good way to pre-sell stadium tickets and inspire exceptional efforts from the student-athletes.

The Post-Mortem: 2019 College Football Recap

Now that the 2018-19 College Football Season is over with the Clemson Tigers claiming the National Championship, it’s time to do a “post mortem” on how the season went, including how The Kickoff measured in terms of our preseason predictions. Of course, you can only be so accurate before Game One, basing your analysis on the prior season’s performance, historic performance over time, the quality of returning and new players, and factors such as the difficulty of schedule, coaching changes, etc. That can all get thrown off if a seemingly difficult schedule ahead is impacted by teams who underperform. That’s part of what makes the off-season so exciting: Trying to look into a crystal ball and determine how things will turn out.

As always, 2018 brought us the share of disappointments and surprises. Once we got into the actual games and Media Days hype turned to Game Day realities, adjustments in expectations naturally followed.
